Barbra Streisand and “Evergreen” (Time: Live In Concert)

I adore Barbra Streisand, if you didn’t know. There are no words for what a gorgeous voice she has. I am a big fan. I also have several of her concerts on DVD, of which Timeless: Live in Concert may be my favorite. “Evergreen” is one of my favorite songs from that concert, and I just found a video of the song that I thought I’d share here.  Continue reading

Caitlin Heaney and “O Holy Night”

My friend Caitlin recently posted a video of herself singing “O Holy Night” on her YouTube channel, CaitlinHeaneyMusic. Today is the day after Christmas, and “O Holy Night” is a gorgeous Christmas song, and of course, Caitlin sounds beautiful, so I thought I’d post the video here. Enjoy! Continue reading

“The Babysitter’s Here” at Bryn Mawr

A week from today, I’ll be seeing Dar Williams live in concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan! Even better, I’m going to the concert with one of my closest Bryn Mawr friends — and Mawrtyrs make anything Dar-related even better. I’m very excited. This will be my fifth Dar concert and my first non-Bryn Mawr with someone from Bryn Mawr. Here’s a video of Dar singing “The Babysitter’s Here” when she was at Bryn Mawr in the spring of 2010:  Continue reading

“Rolling In The Deep” — Adele, Sam Tsui, Lea Michele, and Jonathan Groff

I keep getting Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” stuck in my head. It’s catchy but powerful, and it’s unique. It has also inspired a number of covers that I think are really impressive, particularly Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff on Glee and Sam with Tyler Ward on KurtHugoSchneider’s YouTube channelContinue reading

Mamma Mia! (The Musical)

I love Mamma Mia!. I really do. I know it’s ABBA, and it’s cheesy, and it’s not exactly the most intensely emotional or weighty of musicals (yes, musicals have depth and messages; they’re not all just fluffy bits of song and dance), but I don’t care. I’ve seen it . . . ooh, probably four times? I pretty much try to see it whenever the touring cast stops in Minneapolis. It’s just so much fun! Continue reading

Google Guitar Is Awesome

Yesterday and today, in honor of Les Paul’s 96th birthday, Google’s home page had a guitar. Vaguely in the shape of “Google.” It was so cool. You could click the notes; you could type in letters and make music; you could set numbers to melodies. I was so amused by it. Incidentally, my cell phone number is a pretty little tune.  Continue reading

Darren Criss, Chris Colfer, and Candles = Perfection

I cannot get the Glee/Darren Criss/Chris Colfer version of Hey Monday’s “Candles” out of my head. It is so gorgeous. And the video of it is just adorable (even though, listening to the lyrics, it’s not exactly the most apropos choice for their love song/duet vibes and the little hearts in both their eyes).  Continue reading

Darren Criss and Somewhere Only We Know

I am completely captivated by the Darren Criss/Glee version of “Somewhere Only We Know.” It’s gorgeous. Of course, I also adore Darren Criss (and I love Blaine’s performance skills, even though the character sometimes makes me want to facepalm when he’s not singing).  Continue reading

No More “Wish I May”

Sometime during my first two years in college, Ani DiFranco’s “Wish I May” became one of my favorite songs.  There was something about it that spoke to me, and I just felt a connection to the lyrics — something about that combination of anger and longing, defiance and exhaustion, that seemed to be echoing what I was feeling.

do you ever have that dream
where you open your mouth
and you try to scream
but you can’t make a sound
that’s every day starting now Continue reading

My Anthem: P!nk’s “Raise Your Glass”

I adore P!nk’s song “Raise Your Glass.” It’s a really catchy song, it’s a ton of fun to sing along to, and when I think of an anthem, it’s the first song that comes to mind.

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary lists one definition of “anthem” as “a usually rousing popular song that typifies or is identified with a particular subculture, movement, or point of view.” Another definition is “a song or hymn of praise or gladness.” “Raise Your Glass” is a complete celebration of being the other, being different — being, as P!nk puts it, “wrong in all the right ways.” Continue reading
